We’re Hiring: Orientation and Mobility Practitioner

SAMBT is looking for a passionate, dedicated Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Practitioner to join our dynamic team.

We believe that people who are blind and partially sighted should have the freedom to move through the world independently and with confidence. As our new O&M Practitioner, you will play a key role in turning that vision into reality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver intensive 3-month O&M training programmes across South Africa — these require extended travel and living away from home.
  • Teach blind people (we refer to them as our clients) the skills they need to move safely and independently in their homes, communities, and beyond.
  • Support clients with skills for daily living including cooking, cleaning, laundry, money identification, and phone use.
  • Assess client needs, develop customised training plans, and maintain clear records.
  • Network with local professionals and raise community awareness about the value of O&M.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Certificate or Diploma in Orientation and Mobility.
  • Valid driver’s license and solid driving history.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to speak multiple South African languages is an advantage.

What We’re Looking For:

We need someone physically active, emotionally resilient, and driven to make an impact in the lives of blind and partially sighted individuals. The ideal candidate is:

  • Energetic and fit – able to walk up to 2- 6 km per day and work long hours on foot.
  • Technically skilled and able to understand and interpret eye conditions and related health issues, develop training plans, and navigate diverse terrain.
  • A people-person – someone who builds trust, motivates clients, and works well in a team.
  • Passionate about inclusion, disability rights, and empowerment.

📅 Closing date: 30 April 2025
